Who wants to wear a Scooby Doo Costume? One might think that only children would be interested in wearing a Scooby Doo costume. One would be wrong about that too. Below I've included reasons why both an adult or a child might be interested in wearing a Scooby Doo costume. (Some of my reasons are personal; others are speculation.) The Child Scooby Doo CostumeA child will likely have simple and direct reasons for wanting to wear a Scooby Doo related costume. For the most part, children who like the show Scooby Doo are going to be interested in dressing like Scooby for Halloween. But all kids are different, and while Scooby Doo might be a favorite of some children, other characters, like Sponge Bob or Dora the Explorer, might be more interesting to your particular child. It's possible too that a child might have heard about some other kid getting to wear a Scooby Doo costume. If that's the case, then your child is "keeping up with the Joneses". It's up to you how you want to handle this motivation. I'm assuming that if you came to this site searching for "child Scooby Doo costume" that your child specifically asked you for such a costume. On the other hand, maybe you really like the show and wanted to show some pictures to your kiddo to see what he or she thinks. Either way, it's cool. The Adult Scooby Doo CostumeAdults might have very different reasons for wearing a Scooby Doo costume. I dated a girl once who loved Scooby Doo. I would have gladly worn a Scooby Doo costume on Halloween in order to impress her. If only I had thought about. I met her when she was in her late twenties, and she was still a huge Scooby Doo fan. Even her dog was named Scooby. I bet she'd wear some kind of Scooby Doo related costume too, but if she did, I'd prefer to see her in a Daphne or even a Velma costume. Some adults might want to dress in a Scooby Doo costume for that reason alone. If I could get my wife to dress up as Daphne, well heck yeah I'm going to dress up as Fred. Or Shaggy, if she prefers. Scooby Doo Costumes are for everyone!Scooby Doo costumes are popular for a natural enough reason. Scooby Doo has been a perennial favorite of both adults and children since it premiered 40 years ago, in 1969. The original series was called Scooby Doo, Where Are You?, and it was one of a string of hit Saturday morning cartoons. (In fact, it was the template for other famous and popular Hanna Barbera cartoons, including Josie and the Pussycats, The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, The Funky Phantom, Speed Buggy, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels and Jabberjaws. (Jabberjaws was one of my mom's favorite cartoons.) But none of these other lookalike shows approached the enduring popularity of the Scooby Doo franchise. Not only have there been at least a dozen television show incarnations of Scooby Doo, there have also been live action movies and animated movies. My children are just as excited about watching Scooby Doo today as I was in 1977 when I was their age. Scooby Doo had a cousin named Scooby Dum, and also a nephew named Scrappy Doo, but I suspect that there's not a huge demand for costumes for either of these two secondary characters. A lot of people dis Scrappy now, but when he first showed up, the ratings and popularity of the show improved, so he must have been an effective character in some respect. I think a Scrappy Doo costume would rule though, if anyone ever made one. Scooby Doo Costume TypesNot everyone who comes to this site wants to dress as a dog for Halloween, even if it's a cartoon dog like Scoob. Most of the other people who came to this site (the ones who don't want to dress as Scooby Doo) are interested in one of the following costume ideas: The Fred Scooby Doo CostumeThe Fred Scooby Doo costume might be pretty appropriate if people already think of you as the traditionally handsome type. On the other hand, sometimes it's fun to dress up "against type" for Halloween. I'd only want to wear a Fred costume if it had a really cool ascot. The classic Fred costume would include a white shirt with a blue collar and an orange ascot. Having blonde hair would add a certain amount of authenticity to this costume also. The Shaggy Scooby Doo CostumeThe Shaggy Scooby Doo costume is an obvious choice for stoners, slackers, and wannabe hippies. I'm not even sure you'd need an actual costume for this one. Just fix your hair, grow your chin whiskers, and wear a green shirt. Then you can just say, "Zoiks!" a lot and talk like Casey Kasem. The classic version of the Shaggy costume would include a green shirt. If you're going to make your own costume, you could probably find some scrubs like a nurse would wear that might emulate the look from the cartoon show pretty admirably. The Daphne Scooby Doo CostumeThe Daphne Scooby Doo costume is one of the sexiest costumes I can imagine. She's the traditional leggy bombshell type, and if you want your boyfriend or husband to think, Va-va-voom on Halloween night, you could do worse than to suggest to him that he dress as Fred and you dress as Daphne. The classic Daphne costume would include a blue, almost violet dress, with a big orange scarf. Big red hair would make you look even more like Daphne. A nice figure helps too. The Velma Scooby Doo CostumeThe only character hotter than Daphne in Scooby Doo is Velma. Who doesn't have the intellectual, librarian, bookworm fantasy? And it doesn't hurt that the super-gorgeous Linda Cardellini played Velma in the movie. Like the Shaggy costume, I don't think a whole lot of effort on your part is necessary to look like Velma, so a homemade costume might be very appropriate in this instance. The classic Velma outfit is a brownish orange turtleneck sweater. She also wears glasses and has an almost boyish haircut with brown, almost-but-not-quite red hair. Scooby Doo Costume CombinationsIf you're part of some kind of social group, then you could come up with all kinds of Scooby Doo costume combinations:
And while it's not strictly speaking a Scooby Doo costume, it would be VERY cool to paint your van to look like the Mystery Machine! Adding Some Authenticity to your Scooby Doo Halloween ExperienceIf you really want to feel like you're part of Mystery Inc., then start your Halloween experience off right by having the whole lot of you run into some kind of ghost or monster. That's how most of the episodes of the classic show start. Have someone dress as one of the locals and explain that this ghost or monster has been terrorizing the townsfolk or the rest of the locals for some time now. That will really set the mood. The people wearing the Mystery Inc. costumes should agree to investigate the menace, whatever it might be. It's okay for the guys in the Shaggy and Scooby costumes to act a little reluctant, as if they're scared. The guys in the Scooby and Shaggy costumes should definitely be encouraged to eat. Whether or not they subscribe to the interpretation of the characters that say they're stoners is entirely up to you and the people you're having your Halloween party with. We encourage you to stay within the limits of the law, but on the other hand, it's your Halloween party. Obviously that latter interpretation of how those characters behave don't apply to folks with children involved either. At some point later in the evening, the gang should be able to unmask the ghost or monster. It might even be fun to find someone to dress as a cop for this part of the experience, since a lot of times the villain would get handed over to the kids. The person in the ghost costume should definitely say, "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!" Other More Offbeat Scooby Doo Costume IdeasIf you're having a really big Halloween party, why not have a Scooby Doo themed party where people dress as some of the various guest stars who appeared on Scooby Doo throughout the years? This could include:
There are certainly more options than just those, but those are some obvious choices based on various guest stars who appeared on Scooby Doo through the years. |
